Empire - Sigmar One
Knights of the Griffon
Empire of Sigmar
New week, new army......Warhammer Empire!
This army was painted last year and I want to kick off showing this army to you with the Order of the Griffon. Posts while I cover this army on this blog will slow down a bit now. I have been posting regularly roughly weekly for most of the year, and while there are a few bits and pieces still to catch up on this is the last army of the backlog….well I say that I am not technically finished yet….but is any army ever finished, finished?
On that bombshell, on to the miniatures. These are high fantasy unit made up of four knights, mounted on griffons.
As I haven’t yet finished this army, I was mulling over colour schemes. I aim to paint to a few of the different Knightly Orders, so the first challenge was to select the colours and plan ahead.
I found a few different references to standard silver, blue, and finally white. Not fancying painting white I went with blue. I mainly used Vallejo Model Colour range and for the blue I started with 962-Flat Blue, thinned with glaze medium and went up to a highlight of 844-Deep Sky Blue in about three or four stages. Each layer coverage was less and the mix was lighter than the last.
The
griffons off white cream was starting with 819-Iraqi Sand through to 837-Pale Sand in the same 3-4 layers, however all expect the first layer was dry-brushed as it tends to give a better impression of fur or hair.
I painted skin using contrast Gulliamn Flesh from Games Workshop and highlighted 928-Light Flesh on the nose and checks. Standard silver for the armour and weapons, using Scalecolour Black Metal then Heavy Metal. Gold was back to Vallejo using 801-Brass and adding silver into it bit by bit until bright and extreme. I think that I will have a play about with the gold on armour too, this should to mix up the vibrant mix in this army.
The bases I have kept quite basic ,with a stone and grass or field type look, this is just PVA and sand, heavily dry-brushed over a black undercoat adding static grass to finish. I did magnetise the bases and the movement try for these though, so they all fit in and stay in place quite nicely.
