Empire - Sigmar Four

Altdorf Halberdiers

Empire of Sigmar

This week I am presenting the Empire backbone, the city guard of Altdorf!

Full Unit - JH backdrop

The majority of this unit is the original Games Workshop empire plastic Halberds first released in about 1995. I managed to find 12, basically painted online. I purchased them and applied a thin layer of Agrax Earthshade all over them, I then proceeded to build up a few layers using Vallejo paints so a good highlight was applied all over.

Left front - HeroQuest and Captain

To form the command I built a modern empire captain model my daughter gave me for Christmas, and reused a spare Reiksguard Standard. In addition to this I used a 1980s metal halberdier, and a Citadel drummer, also from the 80s, to finish the units command.

This left the unit a little under strength for the Capital's finest, so I purchased the metal Advanced HeroQuest mercenaries fitted with Halberds. These added the sense of action to the unit and allowed yet more classic models to make it into the army. Finishing the unit I used an Atlantic Wargames Landsknechte Ogre on a 50mm base, I feel this really give some real character to the unit. Plus for those of you that haven’t used this company yet, they are just excellent generally for plastic kits standards, in my opinion.

Rear of the Unit

To paint this unit, I base-coated the unit in black with zenithal white. Using GW contrast paint: blood angels red and ultramarine blue for the clothes, guliman flesh for skin, and snakebite leather for belts and shoes. This covered 90% of the model.

The next stage was to mix Vallejo paints with glaze medium with the same colour codes on my previous blog to add highlights the contrast colours.

Side Unit - Banner is clear

Again I really happy with how the hand painted banner has turned out, using the same technique as mentioned last week. Lastly this week the trays arrived, and this is the first unit to get its own dedicated tray!
