American Civil War - Lee, Stuart and Picketts Division

ACW 15mm Epics

Generals

This week I will try and keep it short and just summarise the remaining elements of this army. Starting with General Lee and Divisional Commanders.

‘Old Man on the Hill’

This little diorama was really easy to achieve, I used the limited edition models that came with the epic battles box set from Warlord Games. I also cut one strip into bits to reflect a unit marching past.

Brig Kempton and Armistead

The next little conversion was made using the same strips command but separating them and repositioning arms, and cleaning up with green stuff. This allowed me to make Brig Armistead with his hat on his sword for Pickett's charge.

Stuart, Longstreet, Pickett with more Brigs

Last of the commanders are above I am sure you are familiar with them all. Two figures on a base are Divisional, and one Brigade, using a mixture of Peter Pig and Warlord Games together here. Bases are just sand and a few rocks not painted to give a dusty feel of summer. Some small patches of static grass and flowers to resemble heather.

Picketts Division

Pickett's Division

At this point I had run out of command strips from the box, but still had tons of remaining standard strips, so what I did was use Peter Pigs to create small commands in Warlord strips regiments, this is why you might notice only one flag per regiment in this division. These are all painted in standard fashion to make the bulk of the army now reflect what someone would expect to see. With this epic division I also did something insane and won’t do again as it was too much of a slog. I painted the entire lot in a production line, one colour at a time. Mostly using contrast paints from Games Workshop. While the contrasts work really well at this scale over a white undercoat I still feel they needed highlighting in places. Overall I am glad to knock out a whole division in one go but took roughly the same overall time. Well for me anyway.

Three times Three Division

The Louisiana Brigade

The next brigade is the Louisiana Brigade, this brigade is nearly all in butternut colour with black straps and cuffs. I find just alternating the cuffs and straps just gives one regiment a different feel to the next, and that with also combinations on the blue, grey and butternut uniforms I have had no problem at all in having each regiment feel different if you choose to. In fact every regiment not in the Picketts Division is different in some way.

Louisiana Brigade

Both the 5th, 6th Louisiana Infantry Regiments, were a part of the division of Maj. Gen. Jubal A. Early. I just supplement the brigades under Jackson from my first post bringing that division up to 5 brigades now.

5th Louisiana Infantry Regiment

Pictures above and below are just close up so you can see how the butternut differs in look to more confederate grey on the other units. They feel more dirty in look to me, though they are quite close the Georgia Brigade from last week.

6th Louisiana Infantry Regiment

The Zouaves Brigade

The last infantry brigade in the army is another mixed brigade, again supplementing the 1st division which I can now split into a third division and promotion for Jackson, taking my total brigades to 11. First, in this Brigade, is the 10th Tennessee Regiment. To paint these I used Union Iron Brigade models but in confederate grey jackets, blue trousers with black hats and straps with red cuffs.

Next up is the Tiger Zouaves painted in two styles across the three companies, both reflective of original patterns, it is also the only Regiment that has two different uniform styles in the same regiment.

Tiger Zouaves full Regiment

Now we have the South Carolina Zouaves, these were originally part of the Hampton Legion but I thought that they would be great to paint as their own regiment in yellows as it was hard to find exact references to other zouaves regiments for the south.

South Carolina Zouaves

The last regiment to feature is the 5th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, in green grey which is hard to see in the picture sorry, I used an Vajello Olive Green and highlighted it by adding Sky Grey to the base colour . This unit was called the Clinch Rifles, and wore a green uniform and acted as skirmishers and sharpshooters for the army. You may see I have cut the hats into kepis and added a gold hat plate which they had in parade uniforms.

The Stuart’s Horse Soldiers

1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment

One last brigade is Stuart's Cavlary Brigade, comprising of 5 regiments. The 1st, 2nd, 10th Virginia Cavalry Regiments, plus Hampton's Light Cav and a battery of horse artillery, also with a dismounted regiment to use in games if needed.

2nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment

The colours for the 1st and 2nd here are identical confederate grey and yellow cuffs, however the 10th  below were the 'Black Horse' so have black cuffs, officers excluded, with less horse colour variation.

10th Virginia Cavalry Regiment

Last is Hamptons light cav and artillery, these are Peter Pigs not Warlord, and serve as my scouting regiment. One might think that the slightly smaller models might make an annoying difference here but it really isn’t that noticeable and by adding an additional mini to this regiment base they actually feel like heavy horse now. So a nice bizarre twist of fate.

Gen Wade Hampton's Light Horse

Horse Artillery

A little diorama for my dismounted cav using varied scraps and basing material, if needs be I can use them for games, or just as another regiment, also with a stand of horse holders just behind.

Full Cav Brigade

Hope you have enjoyed this army and just to prove I they are not all the same I will leave you with a picture of the full army, which is about Corps level in size.

    2. Ha, I did 6mm Napoleonics for a few years.
      Good fun.

If I ever went back to that sort of period I would mess it up and have Richard Sharpe and his crew fall through a wormhole and have to fight in various alternate realities/spheres until they find there way home.
