Wood Elves - Woody Two
Skarloc's Deepwood Scouts
Part Two - Skarloc's Wood Elf Scouts
Skarloc's Deepwood Elf Scouts fight to preserve the edges of their forest home against the depradations of other races, most notably Orcs. Little is known of their deeds, although on one occasion over 200 Orcs of the Broken Skull tribe entered the forest, and none returned.
Skarloc's Deepwood Scouts |
After having completed the Wain Lords, the next most iconic miniature to collect was obviously Skarloc, almost all of us have owned him at one time or another, so after hunting him and most of his Regiment of Renown box set down online, in 2023/4, I set about painting them up.
Skarloc 'The Hooded One' |
First up, to show you is Skarloc himself in his snazzy checkerboard trousers. I decided at this point to start a few themes throughout the collection which will become an army, greenstuff modelled mushrooms and Red Hoods with triangles pattern for Champions and Hero's (I am going back old school/oldhammer here and just giving them all levels). Also the unit symbols or motifs are a theme of sorts, again I am borrowing here from Mike McVey for inspiration, but I do start to vary these to my own designs. An example can be seen here, where Kaia Stormwitch isn't meant to have a banner but I scratch built and painted one on Japanese calligraphy paper.
Glam 'The Laughing Warrior' |
Glam 'The Laughing Warrior' next with the unit musician, both are painted in mainly matt greens and browns, except Glam has another set of snazzy trousers from the tailors. Note, I have added a fairy spite to one base to make the command group stand out even more.
Full Unit Shot |
Back to the unit motifs here, last up we saw Callon and the Wain Lords who have hand painted wings on their shields, I am not sure it is my best work, but it has come out well enough for freehand. The Wings are meant to symbolise the fleetness of the unit. For Skarloc Scouts the oldhammer story is something like; Skarloc's Deepwood Elf Scouts use the symbol of a lone standing tree on a red backdrop. Symbolising the numerous times the scouts have stood alone in a far flung field, selling their lives dearly in the dusk of their race!
Shields follow the unit theme |
You all know how I love to make up stories or elaborate old ones, well at this point I have started to make unit cards and a history for each unit. On this unit card, there are some oldhammer unit costs that balance really well with ToW, and background stories with special rules. You can easily reuse these into new versions of oldhammer if you wanted, I have checked and think they are fine, just check, the points might be a little out of wack now. But I don't really care myself I do this kinda thing for fun. I am open to anyone wanting to play a game and help me expand these ideas.....just drop me a message below!

Unit Card for Oldhammer/ToW |
Another few things of note are first the bases, which are flocked with sand and painted black or dark brown, with a dry brush up to a grey/cream depending on the contrast with the unit cold vs warms. I then add static grass, tufts of different lengths and add a few flowers here or there.

Next my little pro tip lots of thin layers of pain to highlight up the different part of the model once block colours are down. To be honest most of you will paint in this way and it’s nothing new to any of you and if you’re left feeling there’s a different standard between us, then it’s only going to be thin your paint more and practice to get it. It’s taken me 30 years after all. I do hope that’s helpful advice and if there are specific questions then please ask.
Another unit next week, until then stay safe!
Lots of attention to detail and bonus extras.
ReplyDeleteIt i genuinely nice to see someone painting other than to just get them on the tabletop.
There are plenty of Skarloc's Wood Elf Archers out there, but none the same as yours and surley that is worth the extra time and effort.
Mike you are far too kind thank you. Yes lots of hours put into this unit. I would say it’s one of my best units ever.
DeleteThank you for your ongoing support here I really appreciate it. You are one of a select group. 🤣
I like what you are doing, oh and hand painted shields too, extra bonus points.
DeleteNow if only it was WFB 3rd edition I could get even more excited! :P
Well the unit card I have written was for third ed and all I have done is updated the points for the most relevant magic items that compare!
DeleteSo almost there 😊
But where is the INT, CL and WP? :P
DeleteHaha…I took them off as I ran out of room!
