Gartan's Wardancer Troop
Part Three - Wardancers
So time for yet another blog on my growing wood elves. But first a little summary of how the Blog is doing.
 |
Unit Command at normal distance |
So as your all aware since the start of 2025, I left all other media sites and started this Blog linked to Bluesky. I am keeping both to strictly miniature painting too, something I hadn’t always done in the past. After 15 posts and my third army/topic, the reader ship of the blog is on the steady decline since it launched, and I would say it’s now about 20 or so regular readers, from a launching of about 100 views, and one or two regular interactions. I am making note of this now so we can reflect on it in the future.
 |
Galdir, an elf with a deep Scottish accent! |
 |
Eidyn, spent some time in the gladiator slave pits of Kislev. |
 |
Edrim, used to be an acrobatic in a travelling circus that traveled around Bretonnia. |
 |
Eledhirn, the Jester of the woodland court! |
I just want to say a massive thank you to those 20 or so. I notice who you are, and I really appreciate the time and feedback you give me, simply put if it wasn’t for you there wouldn’t be any point in continuing.
 |
Gildorn, the oldest in the troop….was present at the battle of Weeping Wood! |
That’s said, and after missing last weeks Blog post, sorry! Onwards to this weeks Blog, Wardancers!
 |
Lidhir, whispering death….you only ever hear the rustling of the wind as you lose your head! |
I have been posting over the last two weeks my wardancer daily, a single picture of each Wardancer in my unit of 15. Here you can see them all together with the full unit shots.
 |
Full unit shot |
 |
Action shot full of movement |
This unit consists of 15 Wardancers, keeping with the theme of the army. 11 of which are Jes Goodwin classic sculpts from the early 90s, one is converted to be the unit standard. There are also an additional 4 Wardancers from different places, the Champion or Level 10 character, is from Warhammer Quest, with two old Witch Elves, and lastly a Bloodbowl star player, as a converted unit musician, also sculpted by Jes.
 |
Hand painted banner, claw design from Mike |
I think these models by Jes Goodwin are maybe some of the best sculpted models ever! Why I hear you say, because these have flowing movement clearly 20 years before other sculptors who are now creating a similar look.
 |
Erolas, carries the claw or ‘Razor’ standard. She studied under a Cathay sensei |
The standard above is a simple conversion, by cutting the spear at the top hand and replacing it with a plastic high elf spear, which gave me the length on the pole to add the banner comfortably. This model had the best pose for this as the drawing back allows that impression of flowing movement, and it makes it look as if the spear is still functional weapon to remove heads which is key for a small unit such as Wardancers, they can’t afford the pomp or ceremony!
 |
Rear shot of shields |
The Banner is again hand painted on calligraphy paper, copying an old Mike McVey design and the shields are all hand painted to match. These are distributed to about half of the unit as the new Oldhammer rules don’t allow for shields.
 |
Gartan, unit Bladesinger spent years as dungeon adventurer! |
Next the unit Champion, Gartan, he has the notable triangle motive on his trousers as his massive hair didn’t provide for a hood. I am especially pleased with the neatness here and the turquoise green that contrasts nicely.
 |
Elril, after retiring from the stardom of the Empires arenas he turned to music. |
The musicians as mentioned above, is yet another sculpt from the first 90s Wood Elf Bloodbowl team. I replace the left hand with another High Elf spare trumpet part, and added a shield to the left side, it fits great which is a hard achievement in itself with such an old range of models.
 |
Aerin, born in a far off land. Preforms her blood rituals in secret |
Now for what I consider my best painted model in the unit, a converted Dark Elf Witch, she has had both hand weapons replaced, one with a shield, and the other with a Chaos Champions sword. Again spare from the 90s. This and the colour scheme removes it enough from the dark theme of Witch Elves and lands it perfectly in the flowing movement of the unit overall. I also nailed the makeup for her I think!
 |
Midhir, a lover of eagles she wears feathers keeping her safe from danger |
 |
Etain, travelled east in his youth to Nippon where he learned the arts of the ninja. |
 |
Yaloor, master weapon smith can kill you with anything, even his punk hairdo |
 |
Elrim, converted from a champion, loves flowers |
 |
Aengus, converted from old witch elf, the quiet one. |
Lastly above woven into the article, we have the rest of the unit, and below the unit card I am creating for each unit. I won’t elaborate on the story for these this week as I have been posting that bit by bit on Bluesky…..more Wood Elves to come soon!
 |
Unit Card |
Stay safe everyone.
Classic models, nice paintjobs too.
ReplyDeleteCertainly more colourful that I would have done (not that I would stoop to collecting Elves mind you :P ), but it works.
The triangles are very neat!
The conversions are great, I mean I am not familiar with Elves so I would not be able to tell they are not official Wardancer models,
but were I familiar then I would still be impressed with how well they blend in and feel right.
One of them even seems to have vines wrapped on her leg, which is very tree huggery.
Are the names 'official' or of your own design and do they have hidden meaning?
On the subject of social media, I have quit Twitter/X, Bluesky which I found to be the same as X, Instagram and I have just set my Facebook account for deletion, but being stains they make the process take 30 days...
My own blog is now up to the giddy heights of 20 followers!!
But here is the thing.
What was I on social media for?
The local Village FB group and looking at and posting wargames stuff.
The village fb group was nice but not essential, and the wargames stuff was very not essential.
I think we have been condition to quest for likes online, but what is the point of that, in reality?
It means nothing.
A like does not mean that someone even likes it, they have just clicked like.
Why?
In order to get a like back, maybe the owner of the liked post will follow you now too and you can like each others posts, but what actually does this achieve?
It is like and share proliferation for no actual benefit.
We are social animals at heart and that means talking, discussion and chat.
Social media sharing of hobby stuff is mostly a vanity thing or to make money from views.
It is rarely to share and learn and discuss.
I left Bluesky as it was just Twitter by another name, people will leave that platform too, the pattern is all too obvious to see.
Blogs however I think are different.
They are not about likes or monetisation.
I started mine a few months back as a way to share my hobby journey and let anyone that looks for it find it.
They are also personal and more meaningful.
This post here that I am commenting on, too many words for Bluesky so I guess you either had to spread it over multiple posts which makes it harder to read or just direct people from there to here?
Blogs also allow longer comments, this rambling comment of mine, no way I could have written this on BS, so I would have not bothered and just hit like the same as everyone else.
Blogs are slower and take a lot more time to build up some reader base.
But not everything needs to be now, we rarely need instant answers and as for the addiction to notifications from social media platforms, it is not healthy.
I am reliably informed that the younger generation are turning to blogs, not blogger as such, but other similar sites as they too find social media a bit meh.
There are blogs out there that have been around for decades and when you stumble across one with loads of posts that are detailed and full of great content it is like discovering a great book.
Have a think about what you want from your online life, is it to post stuff to get likes and dopmamine hits, or is it to create content that you are proud of and that can bring pleasure to others.
Also consider that blog content is visible to all the www.
Social Media keeps it content away from search engines and quite often accessible only to its users.
For what it is worth I like your blog and am glad you are blogging.
PS: The tear on Eledhirn is very cool.
Mike as ever many thanks I love your comments and thank you so much for your kind praises.
DeleteYou raise so many great points about social media. I not really into the likes either, I just putting here because so many others seem to be.
What do I want for this blog, primarily it’s my own record and diary of painting and to be frank if no one ever reads it fine.
It’s for me more than anyone else.
But also because I have so little intention on hobbies generally it is nice to talk to kind individuals like yourself! I look forward to your comments.
The names are the original names for the formal arrangers, the informal are made up.
DeleteThe stories are all mine own.
"What do I want for this blog, primarily it’s my own record and diary of painting and to be frank if no one ever reads it fine.
DeleteIt’s for me more than anyone else."
If that is really the case then that is perfect.
My own blog is mostly that but there is for sure an element of wanting to connect with like minded people.
The way society works at the moment is that this should be through social media which I do not think is for the good.
I only started my blog as my website which is my main online info dump has no comments section as the software is as old as the Slaan.
I did the blog so that people could comment and or ask questions if they liked but also to show WIPs and ask questions myself, my website proper is just finished items and more of a sort of book or campaign guide diary.
Seems like we are thinking along very similar lines…
DeleteMan alive my spelling….bloody autocorrect AI nonsense.
ReplyDeleteI ment to say Mike the Wardancers names are official GW ones. Except the four added ones which I have made up names for. All the background stories 100% my own (might take a steer from old lore like a name of a place but that’s it).
Ha Ha, thank you, that makes more sense now.
Delete:)
Interesting 🙂👍
