Luna Wolves Demi Company - Post Isstvan III Atrocity

Army Overview

Welcome to the second instalment of my Luna Wolves/Marines Demi Company. As explained last time the backdrop to this Army is a flexible force I could use to switch sides.

Command Squad Cerberus

Garviel Loken seemed a great choice to centre my army around, having survived the Isstvan III Atrocity, half mad he rises to seek out revenge against Horus. As such, he is a really interesting character and even turns down the opportunity to become an original Grey Knight. Therefore I think it’s apt that he becomes 'The' Emperor’s champion instead! So to that end, I set about converting the old emperor’s champion model to represent Lokan. Here he is below, fresh with a Paragon blade and Iron Halo too (well Laurel leaf)!

Lokan Centre, with Command HQ

Also within the HQ squad I have repurposed old 40k, Mark 6 armoured, command squad to make: 1x Chaplin above with the power maul, 1x Vet Sergeant equipped with standard chainsword and bolt pistol, 1x Master of Signal/Captain with comms pack, 1x Chief Medic with company/chapter cup, 1x Chapter Standard/Vet Sergeant with company standard, or just act as normal marines in the HQ squad, whichever I need at the time. It did take me a little converting here to get all these options in one squad. Most notably the Blood Angles cup bearer as Chief Medic, but I think they all tie together nicely. Why did I take this approach I hear you ask? Why not just buy all the relevant consul models for the company..?

Well first I simply can’t afford nor justify spending a cost of a decent meal on one miniature x 6 or 7, and keeping with my army theme, short on manpower the company doubles up on duties.

Squad Ezekiel

Next we have the 10 strong Terminator Squad Ezekiel, consisting of a mix of kit but mainly close combat orientated, plus two heavy flamers. Worth stopping here and adding more of the story for you. Loken is said to try a board at the Son of Horus flag ship to try and assassinate their old Legion, Primarch. To simulate this story playing out, I have used boiler plate plastic card and stuck them to all the bases and painted hazard stripes on a few of them to model the effect of being in deep space on board a ship! This again, £2 for 3-4 A4 sheets and a bit of effort, is a much better cost effective way of replicating what others now make for a kingly ransom. This is only my own opinion and no boiler plate plastic card company is sponsoring me - in fact I never want any sponsorship ever! 🤣

Drop Pod and multi-melta Squad

Further adding to the theme , we need something to help us board the starship and to enable that, I decided to use an Anvillus pattern drop pod to latch on to the side of a ship and dock, or let the multi-meltas burn a hole. Now this is not a traditional boarding platform but it is a really cool looking model and I can use it in games to turn the multi-melta squad into a suicide squad - at around 300pnts any vehicle kill pays you back!

Additionally, I have painted a single Rhino for transporting the HQ squad around. No champion is going to walk everywhere right? 🤣

Originally this Rhino was going to be a Command Rhino to go with the Master of Signal to call down pinpoint bombardments, but with some rule changes, points increase and the original conversion kit costing too much these days it just ends up being a standard Rhino.

Command “maybe” Rhino

More pictures below of the interior of the Rhino, quite happy with it, especially as it was my first ever vehicle!

Hand painted console

Next we have another Tactical squad, again this is a big standard 20 man bolt gun unit. This means we are already 70 plus marines! Below you can see more squad details, each squad has hand painted Vets and Sergeant markings repurposing old 40k ‘beakies’ to make my purchases go further. 4 per squad times 4 squads is another squad people! I have given the Sgt's powerfists and melt bombs in the main, just again to provide a little suprise to the odd heavy tank. The Vets all get bits and bobs added to them you can see below one throwing a grenade and another a comms pack. For fun I have named each squad after a fallen angel, so we never escape the seven levels of hell that is my mind!

Squad Rahab

Another Support Squad, Xaphan, with a Technical Sergeant limited edition rouge trader remake, that I got from attending an event (I think), but with standard markings as other Sergents, he is the only Sgt in the army armed with a combi weapon. The squad has rotary cannons, which is just a futuristic machine gun, so still in keeping with all infantry feel.

Squad Xaphan

Small Devastator Squad & Thud gun platform next, I figured a single gun platform was cheap, points wise, and not a whole battery of them so a fair balance. The devastator squad, Zepar in name, wasn’t even going to exist. However, I was left with 5 old marines unused and spare missile launchers from the sprues that I had been using. So these were added last to complete the army - not planned for, but I don’t see it too out of keeping!

Squad Zepar

Finally…

No, not the end. Nearly got you all, the heaviest element of the entire army the Talon of Dreadnoughts. Again this wasn’t planned for either, I was only going to do one, but the rule changes left me with points left over and I could not stomach, (marines are quite dull to paint in my mind) nor afford another 20 marines. So what I did here was leave the weapons magnetised so to make hot swapping possible, however the 3000pnt army, has two of the three, with hand weapons and combat focused and the last one with ‘skyfire’ to combat flyers.

Well thats it folks, hope you enjoyed this army, I really hope you like the theme and appreciate just having an army plodding along the table top not designed to win any game ever…but if I do, hang your head in shame! 🤣

Not sure what might come next, we’ll have to wait and see.

I will probably move onto the next army from 2019 timeframe. Before I go, lots more photos and details below to take in, until next week, stay safe.
